This 17th-century fortress was built between 1637 and 1638 on the highest point of Macau and contains a chapel and a lighthouse. The chapel is a typical example of 17th-century Portuguese architecture. The lighthouse, which is the oldest on the China coast, was first lit up on 24th September 1865 and still serves as a guiding beacon to passing boats. Guia fort and the lighthouse reflect the splendid history of Macau.

The ruins of St Paul's Cathedral is the most remarkable landmark in Macau. The church was designed by an Italian Jesuit and built from 1602 to 1637 with the assistance of Japanese Christian artisans. It served as the first university in the Far East and was burned to the ground in 1835, leaving only the facade, the staircase and portions of a wall, as it is now. Next to this Heritage Site is the Macau Museum.
